The Federico Zeri Foundation

Federico Zeri

Federico Zeri was born in Rome in 1921 and died October 5, 1998 at his villa in Mentana. Eccentric scholar and art historian, is considered one of the greatest connoisseurs of the twentieth century. At the University of Bologna, which awarded him an honorary doctorate February 6, 1998, leaves the photo archive and art library.

Story

In his will dated 29 September 1998 Federico Zeri bequeathed the University of Bologna his villa at Mentana complete with the collection of Roman epigraphs, the art library and photo archive.

About us

The Federico Zeri Foundation is a centre for research and specialist training in the History of Art. It was set up in 1999 by the University of Bologna with a view to making known the life-work and profile of Federico Zeri, as well as preserving his bequest and turning it to best account: an Art Library (46,000 volumes, 37,000 auction catalogues, 60 periodicals) and a Photo Archive (290,000 photographs of monuments and artworks).

Constituent Bodies

The Federico Zeri Foundation is a subsidiary foundation of the University of Bologna. The Rector is its president. In deciding its activities, the Foundation draws on an international scientific committee formed by the Director and by teachers and scholars of great renown.
