The Federico Zeri Foundation announces it is offering one fellowship for the year 2012.
The fellowship is due to the generosity of Maria Letizia Strocchi in memory of her dear friend Chiara d’Afflitto, scholar of History of Art. It is designed for young scholars who intend to deepen their study and research in the History of Italian painting in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, especially concerning the output in peripheral areas.
Art. 1
Requirements
To participate in the selection, non-Italian citizens must be in possession of a Doctoral Degree (or maîtrise, Magisterprüfung, etc.) in the History of Art obtained at an accredited university or an institution of equal standing.
They must be under 35 years old.
The above requirements must be possessed as of the last date valid for presenting this scholarship application.
Preference will be given to candidates in possession of a specialization diploma or PhD.
Art. 2
Application
Applications should be addressed to the attention of the Director of the Fondazione Federico Zeri, piazzetta Giorgio Morandi 2, 40125 Bologna, Italy, and arrive by March 20, 2012 (download the application form).
Application and proof of qualifications may be directly presented to the Foundation Director's Office or sent by registered post with recorded delivery. In the latter case the postmark will be considered as the date of application.
Applications should include:
a) a copy of the degree certificate with a transcript of the candidate’s undergraduate and graduate records;
b) a printed copy and CD/DVD version of the degree thesis;
c) a “curriculum studiorum”, including the spoken and written knowledge of foreign languages;
d) such qualifications as the candidate may choose to attach, plus letters of recommendation from at least two persons of academic standing who are acquainted with the candidate’s work;
e) the subject of the research which the candidate is interested in pursuing within the History of Art (max. 6.000 characters);
Applications which fail to contain some or all of the documents mentioned, or arrive unsigned, will be discounted.

Art. 3
Selection Committee
The Selection Committee will be composed of the Director of the Federico Zeri Foundation, or one person he may indicate in his place, plus one member of the Scientific Committee proposed by the President of the Foundation, plus Maria Letizia Strocchi herself or a third member proposed by her.
Candidates ascertained to be valid based on a completed application as previously listed are requested to present themselves for an interview to present their research.
Candidates who are non-native speakers are expected to possess an excellent command of Italian.
The scholarship honours the memory of Chiara d’Afflitto; candidates may be questioned on her scientific output.
The date of the interview will be announced to candidates by registered letter with recorded delivery or by telegram, sent at least 15 days before the scheduled interview..
To participate in the interview the candidate will provide a valid ID document.
The Selection Committee will conclude by ranking the candidates and announcing the winner.
The decisions of the Selection Committee are considered final.
The successful candidate must confirm his/her acceptance of the fellowship within 15 days of receipt of the award letter.
Should the winner decide not to take up the scholarship, the Committee will proceed forthwith to nominate the second on the list.
Art. 4
Fellowships
The Federico Zeri Foundation will assign the winner of the “Chiara d’Afflitto fellowship” a grant of €5.000 (five thousand) to be paid in 4 two-monthly instalments of €1.250 each.
Art. 5
General conditions
- The duration of the fellowship is 8 months as from 1st May 2012;
- it cannot be repeated;
- it is not compatible with other overlapping scholarships of any kind and does not give entitlement to health or pensions coverage;
- for serious and motivated reasons the fellowship may be suspended for up to six months.
Art. 6
Conditions applying to the winner
The fellow is not obliged to reside in Bologna but must agree on an acceptable calendar of attendances at the Foundation. The fellow will have a supervisor from the staff of the Foundation.
At the end of the period the fellow is expected to present a written report stating the results of his/her research. The report shall follow the editing rules established by the Federico Zeri Foundation, include a full bibliography and indicate the discovery of any unpublished documents or information.
The Federico Zeri Foundation reserves the right of first publication of the above research results in an appropriate journal for a period of 12 months. After this term the research will be free.
Art. 7
Personal data
Personal data submitted by the candidates will be collected by the Federico Zeri Foundation as per art.10, comma 1, Law 31st December, 1996 n° 675 for the purposes of administering the contest and ensuing procedures.
