The first exhibition devoted to Federico Zeri (1921-1998), presents the great art historian and connoisseur and his studies.
This three-part exhibition opens with a biographical profile of Federico Zeri.
The second section provides a selection of paintings and sculptures from XIII to XVII century from museums and private collections, to illustrate Zeri’s research method.
Zeri’s research into Italian art from the Trecento to the Cinquecento is attested through paintings by Pietro Cavallini, Pietro Lorenzetti, Sassetta, Donato de’ Bardi, il Maestro dei Baldraccani, il Maestro dei paesaggi Kress, Cola dell’Amatrice, Lelio Orsi, Giovanni de’ Vecchi, Scipione Pulzone, Giuseppe Valeriano.
His baroque studies are represented via an array of outstanding still lifes by the Master of Hartford and Juan Fernandez known as El Labrador, and a group of sculptures by Pietro and Gianlorenzo Bernini. These include two “bozzetti” which Zeri donated to the Bergamo Accademia Carrara.
The third section presents to the public for the first time Federico Zeri's photo archive. This invaluable study tool mirrors Zeri’s research and testifies to the width of his interests.
55 late nineteenth-century photographs will be displayed, reproducing paintings from the Italian Renaissance. These valuable large-format carbon and albumen prints found their way onto the international collectors’ market. There are some important photographers among them: Anderson, Braun, Brogi, Hanfstaengl.
A selection of 37 photographs ranging from the late nineteenth to the early twentieth century show places and monuments in Rome and Latium These exciting records testify to long-lost sites and the historical transformation of monuments and towns.
