Information for Users

The archive left to the University of Bologna by Federico Zeri consists of approximately 290,000 photographs and documents that span a period from antiquity to the twentieth century. The photo archive is divided into sections relating to painting, sculpture, architecture, decorative arts, drawing and miniatures, further classified into subcategories according to school, century, genre, and author.

Though the project is ongoing, the decision has been made to make all material presently catalogued accessible to researchers.
Annotations present on the photographs themselves and their original location within the photo archive have provided the basis for each catalogue entry. Not all information, especially that relating to present-day location and attribution, is therefore entirely current.
For Federico Zeri, the photographic archive was an indispensable working tool, which he constantly updated. The placement of a photo within a certain folder does not necessarily imply a decisive attribution to a particular artist. Rather, it can be the result of a working hypothesis or a moment's reflection on behalf of the scholar.
